چکیده

In Vermaat (1999a) and Vermaat (1999b) we have shown that the basic operations Merge and Move can be covered naturally in multimodal Categorial Grammar (MMCG). On the basis of a feature correspondence between lexical feature specifications in Minimalist Grammar (Stabler, 1999, MG) and the categorial types assigned to lexical entries, a mapping can be made between MG and MMCG. As a conclusion of the research in Vermaat (1999a) we have seen that there is no need for ‘phantom’ functional categories in the lexicon. The role of the functional categories as triggers for movement or assigners of inflection to a verb is taken over by feature elements that are implemented as type forming connectives. The connectives are either placed on the so-called goal -formula that drives the derivation to its surface order or put on the moving element itself which is typed as an higher order formula. Why would we choose to eliminate these functional categories from the lexicon? One reason is that by eliminating these elements from the lexicon, less burden is put on the lexicon. The selection procedure and the derivational part of the process have less lexical resources to use, so the lexical complexity reduces. A second advantage is that with less lexical resources, less rules have to be applied, so the derivational complexity reduces. The question that rises after stating these claims is that if we eliminate the use of functional categories from the lexicon, can we capture the role they play in a minimalist derivation? In this paper we want to answer the following two questions:

Students’ Drafting Strategies and Text Quality

The study reports an analysis of the drafts produced by two groups of students during an exam. Drafts were categorized as a function of some of their graphic features (e.g. their length), and of theii different planning strategies used for their production (e.g. note draft, organized draft, composed draft). Grades obtained by the students on their essays related to the different categories of d...

Draft genome sequence of CBS 2479, the standard type strain of Trichosporon asahii.

Trichosporon asahii is one of the important opportunistic pathogenic fungi. Here, we first report the draft nuclear chromosome genome sequence and mitochondrial genome sequence of T. asahii CBS 2479, which is a standard strain of T. asahii that was isolated from a progressive psoriatic lesion. COG analysis predicted that 3,131 genes were assigned to 23 functional categories and that 628 genes w...

Inhibited and uninhibited infants "grown up": adult amygdalar response to novelty.

Infants with an inhibited temperament tend to develop into children who avoid people, objects, and situations that are novel or unfamiliar, whereas uninhibited children spontaneously approach novel persons, objects, and situations. Behavioral and physiological features of these two temperamental categories are moderately stable from infancy into early adolescence and have been hypothesized to b...

The production of lexical categories (VP) and functional categories (copula) at the initial stage of child L2 acquisition

This is a longitudinal case study of two Farsi-speaking children learning English: ‘Bernard’ and ‘Melissa’, who were 7;4 and 8;4 at the start of data collection. The research deals with the initial state and further development in the child second language (L2) acquisition of syntax regarding the presence or absence of copula as a functional category, as well as the role and degree of L1 influe...

Gaining confidence in biological interpretation of the microarray data: the functional consistence of the significant GO categories

MOTIVATION In microarray studies, numerous tools are available for functional enrichment analysis based on GO categories. Most of these tools, due to their requirement of a prior threshold for designating genes as differentially expressed genes (DEGs), are categorized as threshold-dependent methods that often suffer from a major criticism on their changing results with different thresholds. R...
